THE ROCKET

Australia's submission for the Academy Award and winner of the Best First Feature award at the Berlinale and Best Narrative Feature at Tribeca, The Rocket is a heartwarming, triumphant tale of self-love set entirely in Laos. Ahlo is the 10-year-old surviving twin of a difficult birth and is believed to be cursed. When  Ahlo and his family are displaced by the construction of a dam, further tragedy strikes as they relocate. Upon reaching the relocation village, Ahlo befriends young Kia and her eccentric uncle Purple, but is still ostracized by the superstitious community, and even by his own family. Ahlo decides that his only hope of redemption is the Rocket Festival: a riotous, and dangerous, annual competition where huge bamboo rockets are set off to provoke the rain gods.  Set amidst a beautiful landscape, The Rocket is a powerfully moving and uplifting film. “One of the truly special films of the year.” Unseen Films (US). “Endearing, gripping and heartwarming...The Best And Brightest Of The 2013 Tribeca Film Festival”,Indiewire. “Captivating…a total crowd-pleaser, deserving of its wild praise.”CinemaBlend (US)

BREATH OF THE GODS

Modern yoga, that is, the form practiced daily by tens of millions of people around the world, originated in the early 20th century, a creation of Indian savant T. Krishnamacharya (1888-1989). Krishnamacharya’s life and teachings are seen through the eyes of the director Jan Schmidt-Garre on his search for authentic yoga. His journey leads him from the legendary students and relatives of Krishnamacharya’s to the source of modern yoga, at the palace of the Maharaja of Mysore. From Pattabhi Jois Jan learns the “Sun salutation”, from Iyengar the “King of Asanas”, the headstand, and finally Sribhashyam reveals to him his father’s secret “Life Saving Yoga Session”. “A very beautiful film, enchanting and astute at once. Great.” – Yogaeasy "With impressive images and interviews with school founders Pattabhi Jois and Iyengar Mr. Schmidt-Garre shows how Krishnamacharya’s teaching evolved and how the different schools emerged.“ - Neue Presse Hannover

Reel Healing Circle

Mark Whitwell is interested in revealing authentic Yoga as each person’s direct embrace of Nurturing Source. Having studied since 1973 with Krishnamacharya, “the teacher of our teachers” and with his son TKV Desikachar, Mark’s teachings clarify the profound passion and relevance of ancient wisdom to contemporary life. He travels the world teaching yoga and is the author of Yoga of Heart: The Healing Power of Intimate Connection and The Promise of Love, Sex and Intimacy: How a Simple Breathing Practice Will Enrich Your Life Forever. He was also the editor and contributor to TKV Desikachar’s book The Heart of Yoga. Mark created the Heart of Yoga Foundation Peace Project which brings the practical, healing wisdom of yoga to people living in active conflict zones and other troubled areas of the world, providing direct support to teachers.
What does it mean to be a modern Yogi, living in the Western World? How do we remain authentic in our practice, while still following tradition? Where did the major schools of yoga asana originate? How has the relationship between teacher and student evolved in the last century? These questions and more will be addressed in Mark's interactive workshop following the film.
